Manchester Women

I offer many different private walks and tours on the history of Manchester women. Here are some ideas.

Women in the Footnotes This series of walks highlights women who may appear only in the footnotes of the city's history, or whom seem merely incidental to the stories of men. Neither famous nor familiar, we recover the lost stories of these sidelined women. Different routes available for Manchester and Salford.

Criminelle - Manchester's female criminals Hear stories of Manchester women who committed crime in the long 19th Century and beyond. Murder, violence, suicide, theft, sex work, fraud, deception, infanticide, disruption, disorder, protest. We look at their crimes, their punishments, the social context and public opinion.

Manchester Women - the classic tour Discover Manchester women who shaped the city, and whose actions had local, national and sometimes international reach. Suffragists, suffragettes, socialites, scientists, slave-owners, authors, artists, environmentalists, entrepreneurs, pacifists, pioneers, protestors, millionaires and more...

International women This walk highlights a selection of women in Manchester history who had international connections - women who visited Manchester, or who made it their home, or who from Manchester had an international impact. With stories of women connected to Cuba, US, Belgium, Japan, Poland, Jamaica, South Africa, Pakistan, and more.

Women of Oxford Road Hear of artists, writers, scientists, medics, protestors, and many more women associated with the university district of the city.

Women of the last 100 years Hear of Manchester women of the last 100 years. With a focus on the 20th Century, their stories include protests, campaigns, nightlife, nuture, war, work, politics, business, bars and more.

Founders and Entrepreneurs This walk highlights stories of women who set up businesses, from laundries to brothels, as well as the wealthy founders of landmark buildings. Others led protest campaigns for suffrage or set up their own societies when banned from those of men. Hear of loud leaders and quieter influencers.

Some words of caution - these tours include adult themes making them unsuitable for children. Some tours include stories of maternal and baby loss, suicide, or of violence against and by women.

Contact Philippa to discuss private tours for your company or group, at any time of year.

Philippa's walking tours about Manchester women are particularly popular in March to mark International Women's Day and Women's History Month.
